“My philosophy as an artist is to always be learning new techniques and push old ones to the limit. I believe traditional art is to be respected. I am trying to bring back the traditional stone carvings of the Haida.”
While Laurence’s work demonstrates a deep respect for traditional Haida art forms, the artist continues to explore and experiment. An artist since childhood, Laurence won his first art contest while in school and in 1994 was accepted to the Gitamax School of Native Art (K’san) in Hazelton, BC. Laurence’s talent is celebrated in the creations of his stunning and unique argillite marionettes; one piece was recently selected as a gift for the Governor General of Canada, Adrienne Clarkson.
