Katherine is an Elder who went to university to complete her undergraduate degree in Linguistics and her Masters in Education.
She taught the Nuu-chah-nulth language 2 nights a week for a full year, voluntarily, for a group of eager learners at North Island College. She has helped create learning tools for the Nuu-chah-nulth language from books, CDs, a new website and flash cards. She has transcribed an endless number of previously recorded audio resources.
The Nuu-chah-nulth people started a school where she taught as a Language Instructor for 5 years.
Katherine recognized the struggle that first time speakers had with pronunciation and developed an exercise to help them. This exercise has been very helpful in keeping the purity of the language. She helped organize a 7-week Language Camp, which she committed to teaching the entire time. She is very supportive of the Taking Back Our Culture Association, which is a group of all ages and learning levels.
She is always willing to help in anyway she can and we are very fortunate to have a dedicated and knowledgeable teacher.
