Years Working Towards Language Revitalization: 16+

Bev Phillips is a language champion and an inspiration. Since the inception of Stein Valley Nlakapamux School (then it was called Mestanta Technical Institute) in 1993, she has been teaching Nlha.kapmhhchEEn to students from Kindergarten to Grade 7. She is the sole language teacher who has persevered through many challenges and frustrations.

Bev's passion for the language is evident and her work embraces the practices of our traditional teachings. With the guidance of her Elders, she taught herself how to teach, and through the active play and hands-on activities she has designed, the children are learning our language.

Bev developed the phonetic alphabet for the school and she creates her own teaching resources. When requested, she teaches Nlha.kapmhhchEEn to community members. Bev consults with the Elders and she is part of the Nlha.kapmhhchEEn Language Committee. Within our community, she is probably the youngest person who speaks our language fluently on a daily basis and we value her work to teach and promote the language.

Bev Phillips is a well-respected community member whose passion to save Nla.kapmyhchEEn has made a positive difference in our community and in our school.
