First Peoples' Language Needs AssessmentFirst Peoples' will use the data collected to create a picture of the status of B.C. Aboriginal languages through a database and analysis. The analyzed data is reported to program applicants and stakeholders (e.g. Aboriginal communities; Aboriginal organizations) so that they may develop strategies to respond to the needs and challenges of communities, as well as to create a case to leverage more financial support from the provincial and federal governments. Step one in planning a language revitalization project is to review the current status of the language in the community and use that information to develop the most appropriate approach for a language project. For example, if the number of fluent speakers is so low that it is possible that no one will be speaking the language in five years, it may be a priority to document the language and record those few fluent speakers versus providing languages classes. This year you may want to archive the language, and next year use that documentation to provide classes and develop the curriculum.
Successful language projects are based on priorities and long-term plans. The needs assessment is a simple tool to assist in the development of priorities for language revitalization that can then be translated into project goals or objectives for the year. |
